G'day Dog Lovers,
I'm afraid I've got a bit of sad news to share with you. On pg 8-9 of our Jan/Feb issue (currently on-sale at newsagents) we've published a letter written to us from Canada. The author of the letter, Christine MacDonald, wrote about her emotional time volunteering at a Canadian animal shelter.
Unfortunately, the shelter that Christine wrote about - The Durham Region Humane Society - was devastated by fire just before Christmas. 96 cats died, 3 dogs, and a number of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats also perished. The firefighters were able to save 2 cats and 10 dogs.
It happened in the middle of the night and, last I heard, investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze. However, arson has been ruled out.
To make matters worse, several cats that died actually were going to be re-homed the following week. Find out more about the shelter at www.humanedurham.com
This tragic fire is such a sad story and is a timely reminder of the plight of shelter animals in Australia and countries the world over. If you're thinking of adopting a dog from a shelter, I strongly encourage you to get out there and do it.
